Accolades for the M-net Data Centers

Industry association eco recognizes very high quality standards

  • M-net data centers in Munich and Augsburg both awarded 4-star certification
Highest award for the direct connection between the two locations
  • Sustainable thanks to renewable energy and groundwater cooling
The regional telecommunications provider M-net has been distinguished for the high quality of its data centers in Munich and Augsburg by eco – Association of the Internet Industry

Munich, 24.11.2015 – M-net was awarded 4 stars, with a very good overall evaluation, in the demanding eco Datacenter Star Audit (ecoDCSA, Version 3.1). Both data centers in combination offer even higher levels of availability and security: with new organizational measures and the redundant connection between the two locations, M-Net achieved the best possible certification of 5 stars.

Data centers are the heart of the Internet. They host websites, make video streams available and buffer data. Companies can also locate their own servers in these specially equipped and secured centers in order to not have to use the public Internet to communicate. Both data centers of the regional telecommunications provider M-net, in Domagkstraße in Munich and in Steinernen Furt in Augsburg, have been audited by eco.

Both facilities were awarded 4 stars, which is a very good result. This was the second time the Munich data center has taken part in the Star Audit. Thanks to the continual improvements made since the very good first certification process in 2013, it achieved an even better result.

The independent auditors particularly praised the very high level of availability and security of the data centers. They were impressed by the excellent organizational concepts and collaboration between the teams. One of the centers was even awarded 5 stars in the sub-categories Organizational Security and Structural Building Security.

This top result was also awarded for the “Interconnected Site” audit, which looked at communication between the two sites. The focus here is on organizational and supply security aspects of data transfers.

Environmentally-friendly and efficient operation

Both M-Net data centers are operated solely with renewable energy. The center in Augsburg, which was opened in April 2015, received a special award: An additional green star for being an „Approved Energy Efficient Data Center“. This is only awarded by eco’s auditors when the provider has comprehensively addressed energy efficiency and sustainability in the design of its data center. A highlight in Augsburg is the use of groundwater to cool the server rooms.

Markus Niedermeier, M-net’s Manager for Service and Operations is proud of the result: “With the extremely successful result of the Datacenter Star Audit we have documented the high security standards and reliability of our housing services. By utilizing state-of-the art technology as well as the high-performance and multiply-connected fiber optic infrastructure, our data centers offer the highest levels of security and availability for the often very sensitive and business-critical information of our customers.”

eco certificate offers M-net customers reassurance

M-net made a conscious decision to go with the eco Association and the eco Datacenter Star Audit when choosing a certification process. The demanding certification process and industry-wide recognition convinced them.

M-net’s customers benefit from the high level of transparency in the auditing procedure and the easily identifiable results in the form of stars. They can also be sure that their data is not stored on servers somewhere abroad, but in a secure data center in Germany, which meets all of the requirements of German data protection legislation.
